Shooting Guard Series: Part 1

  Shooting Guard Fundamentals

Being a great shooting or "scoring" guard really comes down to 3 things:

  1. Can you fit your scoring style with the team & system you're in
  2. Can you be a consistent & dangerous scorer for your team and possibly carry the responsibility of making baskets for your team
  3. Can you guard the other team's top scorer and hold them below their average
Along with a whole host of other responsibilities that differ from team to team. But this post is focused on the scoring part of your game. For easier organization we'll describe scoring styles like this: Ball Handler's & Off the Ball.

Most players prefer to operate inside (slashing and posting up) or on the outside (with perimeter jump shots). This is just for organization though, in reality you want to be able to score effectively in every scenario. So here are a few fundamental categories you should work on to keep you effective as an all-around scorer.

       Shots

Layups- Aim, Push or Underhand release, and good footwork

Jumpshot- B.E.E.F or Balance, Eyes, Elbows in, and Follow through

from Triple Threat-  Jab & Go, Jab & Shoot, Pump Fake & Shoot, Pump Fake & Drive, Reverse Pivot (away from pressure), 1 Dribble Pullups

Free Throws & Corner 3's- These are two of the more consistent shots in the game of basketball. Along with layups, these two shots are usually the highest percentage field goals

Ball Handling

Speed dribble-- Protect dribble-- Crossover-- Shield Crossovers (Between the legs and Behind the Back)-- Pullbacks-- Hesitation moves-- Cutoff Moves (Spins, Wrap Arounds, etc)

Shot Selection

I'll touch on this more in Part 4 but basically:
  1. Make sure the majority of your shot attempts are high % (close to the basket or within your range) and on balance
  2. Constantly move without the ball and always look to threaten openings in the defense
  3. DON'T be a ball stopper! If you're opportunity is gone, find open teammates and re-attack
  4. Only take shots in your range
  5. Be clever with the ball and your movement (use fakes and change speeds often)
This 4 part series on scoring isn't going to solve EVERY question for you as a scorer, but it will answer a lot of them. Keep developing these fundamental skills with your overall game and regardless of your preferred style, you'll find a way to be effective. Below is a video of great shooting guard fundamentals by JJ Redick.
